ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- Jason Jaffray scored 52 seconds into the game, and Eddie Pasquale made 36 saves to lead the St. Johns IceCaps over the Manchester Monarchs 4-1 in American Hockey League action on Friday. "We got off to a good start and scored that early goal," IceCaps forward Adam Lowry said. "Then we got back on our heels a bit in the third period. We did a good job keeping their shots to the outside in the third." Despite being outshot 18-7 in the third period, partially due to having to kill three penalties, Pasquale kept the IceCaps in the game. Head coach Keith McCambridge was happy with the teams penalty kill. "In the third period especially, our penalty kill was tested," McCambridge said. "The foundation for all penalty kills is making sure your goaltender is the best guy (out there). I thought Eddie (Pasquale) made some huge saves for us to be able to keep momentum." One player who is making the most of his penalty kill opportunities, according to McCambridge, is Adam Lowry. "Hes really good and hes been good all season," he said. "He possesses long range and takes up a lot of ice, and he is able to read well on the forecheck. Lowry is a player that has a lot of intelligence on where to be on the ice and hes been key for us." Lowry is happy to have an expanded role with the IceCaps, which allows him to be killing penalties and learning from veterans. "Its good any time your role is increased with the team, you want to make the most of it," Lowry said. "(Patrice) Cormier and Jaffray have helped me out a lot on the penalty kill and knowing where to be." Jerome Samson scored two goals, and John Albert had one for the IceCaps (20-15-3), who won their second in a row. Nick Deslauriers replied for the Monarchs (25-11-6). Jaffray opened the scoring when he tapped in a rebound off an Andrew Gordon slapshot. Albert made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal when he cut across the net and beat Jean-Francois Berube with a backhand shot at 7:56of the second period. Samson got his first goal of the game on the power play at 11:20 of the second, to make it 3-0. The Monarchs got on the board at 14:17 of the second period when Jordan Weal tipped a pass across the crease to Deslauriers, who scored into a practically empty net. Samson added an empty netter for the IceCaps with 14 seconds left. Berube made 27 saves for Manchester. St. Johns was 1 for 4 with the man advantage, and the Monarchs were 0 for 5. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, the Houston Texans No. 1 pick in the draft, was on the field Tuesday for the first time with former NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.From Dennis Thurman to Blair Thomas, unlikely players have stepped up to help the Dallas Cowboys beat the Green Bay Packers in past playoffs.Dont be surprised if the star of Sundays divisional playoff game at Green Bay isnt Tony Romo or Aaron Rodgers, DeMarco Murray or Eddie Lacy, Dez Bryant or Jordy Nelson. Many lesser-known players have produced plenty of clutch post-season performances over the years. Thurman and Thomas are just two examples in this series alone. When Emmitt Smith went down with an injury against the Packers on Jan. 8, 1995, Thomas replaced him and ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns to lead Dallas to a 35-9 win. Thomas had just 137 yards rushing and two TDs the entire season split between New England and the Cowboys.A decade earlier, Thurman intercepted three of Lynn Dickeys passes to help Dallas beat Green Bay 37-26 in a playoff game on Jan. 16, 1983. He returned one of those picks 39 yards for a TD.Here are potential unsung heroes for each of the NFL teams playing this weekend:RAVENS: Joe Flacco may be the new Joe Cool in the playoffs, but safety Will Hill could be the key to victory for Baltimore. Hill is responsible for trying to stop Rob Gronkowski. If Hill keeps the All-Pro tight end in check, the Ravens have a better shot at the upset.PATRIOTS: Shane Vereens numbers have steadily declined this season, but the Patriots need one of their running backs to deliver against a run defence that allowed the fourth-fewest yards in the league. LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray are also part of New Englands committee backfield. Vereen has extra motivation Saturday night facing former college teammate Justin Forsett.PANTHERS: Luke Kuechly and Seattles Bobby Wagner are All-Pro linebackers so most of the focus is on them. But another linebacker, Thomas Davis, will play an integral role for Carolinas defence. Davis has to help slow down Marshawn Lynch aand contain Russell Wilson.dddddddddddd While Kuechly draws the attention, Davis performance can go a long way toward lifting the Panthers to a major upset.SEAHAWKS: Rookie wide receiver Paul Richardson had 10 receptions for 112 yards in Seattles last two games after catching 19 passes the first 14. Richardson has big-play talent. The Seahawks had only one player — Doug Baldwin — catch more than 40 passes this season, so Wilson spreads the ball around.COLTS: Tight end Coby Fleener had 291 yards on nine of his receptions and gained first downs on 40 of his 51 catches. Andrew Luck and the Colts have a deep threat in T.Y. Hilton and the dependable, veteran hands of Reggie Wayne. Fleener, Lucks teammate at Stanford, is a go-to type of guy who can make a difference in a shootout.BRONCOS: Rookie cornerback Bradley Roby knocked down Lucks fourth-down pass to Wayne to seal Denvers 31-24 win over Indianapolis in Week 1. Now Roby has a chance to be the star in his first playoff game. Luck will likely target Roby more than the formidable duo of Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib.COWBOYS: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has turned into Jerry Jones good-luck charm. Christie governs a state filled with fans of the Giants and Eagles, but he grew up rooting for the Cowboys and sat with Jones in the owners suite last week. His awkward, celebratory hug of Jones when the Cowboys sealed a win against Detroit was the punch line for quite a few jokes this week.PACKERS: Fullback John Kuhn earned All-Pro honours for doing the dirty work to help Green Bays offence soar this season. Kuhn doesnt get the ball much — 24 carries, 4 catches — but hes vital to the Packers success because hes an excellent lead blocker and pass protector.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.organd AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Rob Maaddi on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_RobMaaddi ' ' '
